My Thoughts on the 2027 Hobonichi Line-Up

I’ve only been a Hobonichi user for the last couple of years, but both years there has been something, if not multiple things I’ve been really excited about during the August reveals. I’m always excited for the One Piece products, but in 2025 there was also the Spy x Family stuff, and last year there was the Tamagotchi collaboration.

The 2027 reveals have unfortunately felt a bit disappointing to me. The most exciting collaboration in my opinion was the Hello Kitty one which was revealed at the end – so imagine my disappointment to find out that it’s a Japanese exclusive.

I can understand why that might be – I imagine worldwide licensing of Sanrio characters is expensive – but it was the only thing that really appealed to me, other than the One Piece stuff. Which I guess is good for my wallet, at least!

That’s not to say there wasn’t plenty of good stuff revealed, it just either isn’t my aesthetic, or I don’t like it enough to buy it. For example, the Yumi Kitagishi products are, as always, beautiful, but just not really my thing. There is also a swallow patterned drawer pouch and Weeks from the Natal Design collaboration that I like, just not enough to actually buy it. I also like the A6 Lilac ‘Only Is Not Lonely’ cover, but again, probably not enough to buy it.

So what will I be buying?

It’s all One Piece stuff! As always, I’ll be buying the A6 One Piece HON: I’ve been using one of these for the last two years as a daily gratitude journal, and have done really well keeping up with it.

I also really want the One Piece drawer pouch. I’m not sure why they have chosen to use the pattern from two years ago, but that was my favourite one, so I’m not complaining! I don’t think they’ve ever done a One Piece drawer pouch, so this was probably the most exciting thing they revealed this year from my perspective. I may also get the A5 Going Merry cover, even though I absolutely don’t need anymore covers!

With the small amount of stuff I’m buying (I say small amount – it’s still going to be pretty expensive!), I think I’ll buy it from a local store rather than direct from Hobonichi, although it is a shame, as I really like the colour of the free pen this year. But I’m not paying an extra £30 in shipping just for a free pen!

So what did you think of the 2027 Hobonichi line-up? Did anything catch your eye this year, or were you also disappointed?

I am fortunate to have absolutely zero interest in Hobonichi, so this is one part of the planner refresh season I can happily sit out.

I really wish I wasn’t interested in Hobonichi either! It can get really expensive, not to mention the frenzy around release is stressful!

Not a huge hobo buyer as I find their layouts a little wasteful on space + inflexible, but sometimes grab accessories. I love the blue folio cover in terms of colour, basic layout and materiak, but the pricing leaves something to be desired. $75 AUD in a local store for a basic canvas/cotton cover! What I really want is the BK x AP Canvas Cover that is only $25 US ($35 AUD), but no real viable way to get it here. Hopefully one day I find myself in LA.

I definitely buy more of their accessories (mainly covers!) than their actual planners. I get an A6 Hon every year, but I long ago gave up on the Weeks, as I can never get it to work for me.
I totally agree though that the pricing can be crazy! And you can’t win either way: you either pay the lower prices and buy direct, and pay a tonne of postage, or you buy from somewhere local, and pay the much higher prices.
I really hope you get the cover you want one day though!

Like you, I have the Spy x Family cover, and I’m rather disappointed at how it’s holding up. I knew it’d wear some, and I don’t expect covers to stay perfect, but it’s my newest notebook cover and yet somehow looks like it’s the oldest…. So I decided not to buy another Hobonichi one this year. I was really tempted when they had Moomin ones that were available in the US (unlike last year!), but Moomins have become even mote commercialized this past year, which is so counter to the message of the books that I struggle to get excited about new products anymore.

All the same, I will probably buy another A5 Cousin Avec!

    1. That’s such a shame about your Spy x Family cover! Mine has held up ok, just a few marks, but it never leaves my desk. I like the design, but it has never felt like the best quality cover though, to be honest. I have one of the plain colours ones, which I bought secondhand which seems to have held up better, although I have had a cover on cover on it since last year, which helps.
And I know what you mean about Moomins, they are definitely very commercialized now. I feel like I see them everywhere!

To be fair, I carry mine all over the place, but I am careful about the kind of bags I put it in. And so, yeah, maybe I should have gotten a cover on cover, but I think my main takeaway is just that it’s not a sturdy enough cover for how I use my notebooks. I bought a fabric Liht Lab cover nearly a decade ago that’s traveled all over with me and, aside from some glitter that it picked up at some point, looks nearly new. Galen Leather notebook is aging beautifully. But this one has stitches coming loose, stains that I don’t know what from, and the lettering is fading. If the covers were more affordable, I wouldn’t mind, but I don’t want my notebook covers to feel disposable.

And yes! There’s been a cottage industry of Moomin merchandise for decades—-especially in Finland (of course) and Japan—-but in the past few years, it’s just become more and more widespread in the US to the point that it’s turning me off. Still love all the books and comics, and in general I am glad more people know the magic of the Moomins, but even so, I just wish it wasn’t so commercial.

      2. Yeah, it really should be able to hold up to being carried around in a bag for the price of it! I feel like Hobonichi has just got more expensive as well, even in the couple of years I’ve been buying it, and the quality isn’t always there (I’m definitely rethinking buying another A5 cover now I’ve seen the price from a local shop will be £60!).
Lihit Lab’s stuff seems really good – I have a pen case from them that I’ve taken travelling, and it still looks like new. And it was very inexpensive! I didn’t know they did notebook covers, so I’ll have to check that out.
And I can totally understand why Moomins becoming so commercial is off putting!
