A little while ago I did a post about my Kaweco collection, since I own a lot of that brand of pen. Another brand of pen I own a lot of is Lamy, and so I thought I’d do a similar post about my Lamy collection.
My Lamy collection isn’t as extensive as my Kaweco collection, comprising only 5 pens. That isn’t that many, but is probably still too many considering they are all entry-level Lamy pens with fine or extra fine nibs, so they all write similarly. But Lamy is another of those brands that is constantly coming out with new colours and versions of their pens, and I’m exactly the sort of person who gets suckered in by that sort of thing!

The first Lamy pen I bought was the Strawberry Lamy Safari, and it was one of my earliest fountain pens. I loved the modern look of it and the bright colour, and I even liked the somewhat divisive triangular grip. I also liked the matte finish of the pen, and how the clip matched the body of the pen, something I’ve since found out isn’t always the case with Lamy Safaris. I only found out after buying this pen that it was one of the 2022 special colours, and I loved it so much I quickly snapped up the other, in Cream, because I thought they looked good together.
The Cream Lamy Safari was actually a bit of a turning point for me in terms of my fountain pen journey. Previously I tended to gravitate towards brightly coloured pens, but I ended up liking the neutral colour of the Cream Safari so much that it opened my eyes to the world of neutral pens, that would go with any inks! My love of the Cream Lamy Safari definitely paved the way for me eventually buying the TWSBI Eco Creme, which is now one of my favourite pens!

After my initial Lamy purchases I figured I didn’t need any more Lamy Safaris, however much I liked them. Two was enough! But that didn’t stop me from buying the Lamy Al-Star in Blue/Green a little while later, since that was technically a different model of pen. I do really like this pen though, as the metallic finish is a nice difference from the matte finish of my Lamy Safari Strawberry and Cream pens.
Around this time I also discovered a love of demonstrator pens (thanks to TWSBI!), and so when I found out the Lamy Vista existed, I had to have it!
After that I stopped with Lamy for quite a while, figuring I had enough variations of what was essentially the same pen…but then the 2024 edition Lamy Safaris were announced. If these had been single colour pens like usual, I honestly don’t think I would have been bothered. But there was something about the flash of colour off these pens when you remove the cap that really got my attention!

I’m quite surprised, to be honest, that I resisted so long, as I only recently finally got the Lamy Safari Violet Blackberry pen, and needless to say, I love it! I was initially more drawn to the Pink Cliff, but somehow the Violet Blackberry grew on me, and ended up being my choice, since I was trying to be strict with myself and only buy one.
And then the Lamy Safari Cherry Blossom was announced, which really blew up my plans to not buy any more Lamy Safaris! I haven’t bought it yet, and I’m seeing how long I can resist, but it is on my wishlist!
Of course, there’s a whole world of Lamys beyond the entry-level pens I’ve explored so far, but to be honest, none of them especially appeal to me. I love the fun colours of the Safari, but when it comes to their metal pens, they just don’t do anything for me, especially as I’m not a huge metal pen fan in the first place. Even their premium offering, the Lamy 2000, just looks boring to me, even though I’m sure it’s an amazing writer.
Maybe I’ll change my mind in the future, but right now the only Lamy on my shopping list is the Safari Cherry Blossom, which is a good thing, because at least it isn’t expensive!
So do you like Lamy pens? What’s your favourite pen in your Lamy collection?
