Review: Benu Pixie Pocket Plum Cream Fountain Pen

For the longest time I’d been meaning to add a bit of Benu sparkle to my pen collection, but with so many beautiful options, I’d never settled on one. But when they announced their new line of pocket pens – the Pixie Pocket – there was one colourway that stood out to me, and that was Plum Cream.

The Pixie Pocket Plum Cream is an unusual mix of pastel pink, chunky gold glitter, and a more subtle sparkle to the deep purple section. I loved the look of it from the promotional photos, but I have to say, it’s even more stunning in real life.

I also wasn’t prepared for quite how tiny it would be! The design reminds me so much of a Kaweco Sport, I’d assumed it would be similar in size, but as you can see from the photos, it’s much smaller, but chunkier.

The actual pen section in particular is tiny, so posting this pen is a must. It didn’t initially post as well as I’d have expected for a pen where posting is essential, but I quickly realised you could post it firmly, you just had to push down harder than you’d expect. Again, I’m perhaps just too used to the Kaweco where you can easily pop the cap on the end, and it’s quite secure. Now I’m used to it, it isn’t too much of a problem, but I do always worry about scratching the pen with how firmly you need to push down on it.

Once posted the pen is a decent size, and not too far off the Kaweco Sport, although I’d still say it wouldn’t be my first choice for long writing sessions.

The nib is a #5 Schmidt nib, and I’ve found it to be surprisingly fine for a European nib. It’s nice and smooth though, although I have felt the odd skip when it’s at certain angles. The nibs are easily swappable though, and I’m considering swapping the nib with the medium Schmidt nib from my Kakimori Frost.

I inked the pen with Herbin Poussière de Lune, a lovely deep purple to match one end of the pen, and I really like the combination. The pen is so small the only converter that will fit is apparently the Kaweco Foldable converter, but I’ve just been syringe filling empty Kaweco cartridges, which is working just fine, and gives it a higher ink capacity. This is always a problem with pocket pens I guess!

On the whole though, this is a fun little pen! It’s very cute and sparkly, and despite its similarities to the Kaweco Sport, it feels like a unique pen in my collection. It’s definitely made me want even more Benus, and my eye is currently on the upcoming new release of the Talisman in Moonstone!

So do you have the Benu Pixie Pocket? What do you think? What’s your favourite pocket pen?
