I’d had my eye on the Kaweco Art Sport fountain pens since their release, but could never really justify spending almost £100 on what was basically another plastic Kaweco Sport. Yes, unlike the regular Sports the Art Sports are acrylic, and they have stunning patterns on them, and a built-in clip, but the price still seemed a little steep for what it was.
But then they went on sale on Cult Pens, for £20 off, and I could no longer resist, despite my logical brain trying to dissuade me! So I ended up picking up the Kaweco Art Sport in Hickory Brown, with a fine nib. And wow, what a beautiful pen!

Upon taking it out of the box I was immediately struck by how nice the acrylic was. The colours are really deep and rich, and the lighter areas have a beautiful chatoyance that catches the light. The gold detailing really suits this pen and gives it a classic look, and the built-in clip is an extra feature that isn’t usual to Kaweco. I didn’t think the clip would make that much difference to the pen, since I rarely bother with the add-on clips for my other Kaweco pens, but it’s actually a nice touch!

The acrylic plastic definitely has a more robust feel to it than the regular plastic Kaweco Sports, but I’m not sure it’s enough to justify the huge jump in price tag. Although I suppose you’re paying more for the pattern of the acrylic, and the uniqueness of each individual pen.
I also enjoyed the writing experience, but I don’t necessarily know if it was worth the increased price. I inked the pen up with Herbin Lie de Thé (a lovely ink match!), and have been using it for the past few weeks, and have found it to be the same as my other Kaweco Sports: smooth and consistent. I know a lot of people have consistency problems with Kaweco nibs, but personally mine have all been fine, and this pen was thankfully no different.

It also wasn’t any better than any of my other Sports, despite the price hike, which to be fair, was expected. I was fully aware buying this pen that it was the same nib as all my other Sports, and that this was more of an aesthetic purchase. But it still seems a tad crazy to get the same experience writing with this pen as with my £20 Kaweco Sport.

At least with the Kaweco Al-Sport the body of the pen feels noticeably different – it’s heavier, and the smooth, matte metal finish gives it a premium feel. The Art Sport definitely has some premium touches like the nicer plastic and the clip, but it still ultimately feels the same in hand as a regular Kaweco Sport.
That’s not to say I don’t love this pen though! It’s easily one of the prettiest and classiest looking pens in my collection, and is an eye-catcher to say the least. But overall I’m glad I didn’t pay full price for this pen, as I feel like there are pens with a better writing experience that could be bought for the £95 mark.
So do you have any of the Kaweco Art Sport fountain pens? What colourway is your favourite? And do you think it’s worth the money?
